Advertising’s Newest Challenge: AI-powered Ad Fraud

AI-powered ad fraud has broken the rules for digital advertising campaigns. Originally, marketers could set out their ad budgets and trust their bidding algorithms to deliver results. The rise in sophisticated AI-powered bots have damaged this trust however, as they are flooding campaigns with fake clicks and distorting bidding data.

Generative AI has given fraudsters access to an industrial-scale toolkit. Now, bots can mimic human users with more than enough accuracy to bypass filters. Algorithms then optimise towards these fake users, ensuring future losses. All the while fake clicks are directly draining pay-per-click (PPC) budgets.

Marketers need to take it upon themselves to tackle fraudulent engagement before the damage is done. Without a strategy in place, marketers risk snowballing losses.

Next-Gen Ad Fraud

Generative AI has lowered the entry barrier for ad fraud, making it much more accessible for fraudsters regardless of skill level. It can be deployed to make fake websites, content, and now it can create invalid traffic (IVT) in the form of bots that can replicate human user behaviour.

Fraudsters can set up networks of mobile devices known as click farms. These devices are all run from a central dashboard to generate fake clicks, installs and engagement in large volumes. Imperva’s 2026 Bad Bot Report found that bot traffic is already making up 53% of all internet traffic.

AI programming means bots now behave like your ideal customer. They can browse your store, add items to carts and fill out forms with believable details. To make its behaviour seem more realistic a bot will hesitate over buttons, partially watch videos and move its cursor in curving motions instead of straight lines. This tricks basic filters, allowing floods of fake traffic through.

Bots are capable of learning. They test the boundaries of a brand’s defences with different clicks and impressions. Fraudsters can then work out what behaviour passes as “normal”, and what will be flagged as “suspicious”. They can then generate traffic that sits within the normal range.

Fake clicks deplete PPC budgets rapidly, and once this budget is done the ad is taken down. This prevents new users from seeing the ad, leaving brands paying out for redundant traffic that provides no incremental value.

The damage also extends to your campaign data. Engagement levels look like they’re soaring at a first glance as bots come in high volumes. The reality is that fake clicks and conversions from bots distort the signals Meta and Google use to optimise your bidding algorithms. They’ll start to prioritise the wrong users and future ad spend will be pushed in the wrong direction. With bots actively draining ad spend, and corrupted campaign data optimising low-quality traffic, losses for brands are building up.

Proactive Defence

Marketers need to take it upon themselves to tackle AI-powered fraud before it can impact their budgets. Without a strategy in place, marketers risk significant profit loss and distorted campaign metrics. There are steps they can take, including:

  • Regular Traffic Audits: Proactively monitoring traffic and auditing campaigns can help brands identify if bots are infiltrating their systems. Bots can accurately mimic human users, but the disguise isn’t flawless. Signs of potential bot activity could be fake leads or forms filled with invalid details. It could also be a sudden influx of traffic, especially at suspicious times that your audience isn’t normally active. If engagement is booming but conversions aren’t matching, it’s likely this traffic isn’t genuine.
  • Building Up Identity Verification: Bots can bypass most simple forms, they then create multiple fake accounts and repeat the process. Brands should strengthen their identity verification with tactics like more detailed forms or complex CAPTCHAs to deter bots.
  • Deploying Anti-fraud Tools: Manual checks can help catch fraudulent traffic, but they can only catch it after the fact, and teams are stretched too thin to monitor it all. Marketers should be tackling sophisticated AI bots with equally sophisticated tools. While AI has been helping fraudsters, it can also be leveraged by marketers to analyse and identify any IVT in real time. AI agents can evolve alongside ad fraud by independently researching emerging trends and patterns. Marketers can then protect their budgets and ensure future campaigns aren’t affected.

Setting a Strategy

Invalid traffic drains advertising budgets before anyone notices. Bots click ads. Competitors click ads. Click farms manufacture conversions. This traffic is rapidly draining budgets and corrupting optimisation efforts. The challenge is that fraud changes too fast for a static blocklist to keep up.

Marketers need to be evolving alongside fraud tactics to beat threat actors at their own game. The marketers who hold their ROI will be the ones who move from passively trusting their algorithms to proactive, independent verification across every channel.
